Anamika Khanna, A Milestone of Indian Fashion

anamika khannaThe year started well for Anamika. The Kingfisher Award for the Fashion Designer of the Year is already in her bag.

Anamika started designing “Without any formal training in the craft. The Damania Fashion Award (1995) jump started her career, which bought her into the limelight and her creative versatility.

Her work comprises two lines – Prêt and Couture. Anamika Khanna specializes in trousseau wear with color and crafts being her forte. Strictly, conformist in the non-conformist way, her look is global with ethnic Indian craft as her mainstay. Her prêt line borders in seriously quirky, giving the word ‘trendy’ a new definition. It is the blend of ethnic and western in her collection that has appealed to the fashion conscious all over the world and bought her clients from Spain, UK, USA, Japan, Thailand, The Middle East etc.

Her spacious store in Kolkata almost stands out as a landmark and redefines fashion retailing, exuding a sense of whimsical style yet serenity at the same time. Anamika Khanna also retails through Carma (New Delhi), Ogaan (New Delhi and Kolkata), Ensemble (Mumbai and New Delhi), Espee (Kolkata), and other prominent stores across the country.

After the success of her show at the Lakme India Fashion Week Grand Finale 2004 she got an overwhelming response at the London Fashion Week 2005. This was followed with an exclusive contract with British major, Harrod`s. Other major awards include an induction into the Damania Fashion Hall of Fame, the Exports Council Award, the Texcellence Award for Outstanding Boutique (Female) and the Kingfisher Designer of the Year Award 2004. She was nominated at the MTV Youth Icon Awards 2003 as the Breakthrough Designer of the Year, at the MTV Lycra Style Awards 2004 as the Designer of the Year and at the F Awards as the Designer of the Year (Women – Prêt), 2004. As a part of Bridal Asia, Anamika Khanna was invited to Pakistan along with two other “fashion gurus” to showcase their exquisite bridal collection there. She has been invited to showcase her collection at the Will’s Lifestyle India Fashion Week Grand Finale AW 08 edition again this year.


The collection is ethnic and sporty, targeting a younger audience in line with Lakme’s summer range. The silhouettes are global with every fabric used being ethnic. BURST is bright, full of vivid colours and every garment depicting fruit colours’, vivacity and energy.

Wills Fashion Week – 2010, Edgy and Eclectic

Anamika Khanna showcased her S/S 2010 collection with the edgy and eclectic taking on Indian sensibilities and craft. The collection is dedicated to a woman who knows her mind and is thus represented by black and white contrasts. She is non-traditional with the sari worn over pants, treats expensive with nonchalance and has the courage to finally wear her fully crafted jacket in tatters.

The sarees were in solid colours with sheer imparting a glamorous persona. A touch of copper border added the sheen. Muslins, chiffons and summer silks were crumpled in every form. Khanna has used calico prints in her collection.

That’s ANAMIKA KHANNA! A regular participant in fashion shows, her look is classy yet subtle, creative yet traditional, stylish yet comfortable. Yes, style never got as good as this!
