Like everyone else, we Indians are proud of our motherland. And like everyone else, we love to wear our pride as well, especially during our Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations. So, what’s the best way to showcase our love for our country and our patriotism? Simple, sport the three colors (saffron, white and green) that are present in our Indian National Flag.
What about wearing the Indian National Flag itself? Turns out that there are some rules governing what constitutes disrespect are outlined in the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. This act was amended in 2003 in response to calls for Sachin Tendulkar to stop sporting the national flag on his helmet. The amended act only prohibits usage of the Indian National Flag:-
(i) as a portion of costume, uniform or accessory of any description which is worn below the waist of any person; or (ii) by embroidering or printing it on cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, undergarments or any dress material.
Therefore, to show no disrespect (however unintentional) to the National Flag, it is always better to sport the colors of the flag without actually sporting the flag itself. Let us make sure to abide by the rules. Therefore, here are a few ways you can sport the tricolor (saffron, White and green) this Republic Day:
Wear a tricolor sari:
You can wear a white sari with saffron and green embroidery and prints. However, refrain from wearing a sari with three- color borders with saffron on top, white in the middle and green on the edge. It looks very close to the national flag and will be touching your feet, which shows extreme disrespect to the flag. Even though you are not technically wearing the national flag, it will still heart the national sentiment.
Create a contrast with the blouse:
Wear a white and green saree and complete the look with a saffron embroidered or bandhani printed blouse. This way, you can be sporting the tricolor without being disrespectful. This look can be improved with vintage makeup and accessories. Just do not make yourself look like a walking national flag.
Wear a tricolor dupatta:
The best way to sport the tricolor is to wear a tricolor dupatta with a white salwar kameez. For the classic look, go for a white on white kameez and churidar salwar. You can also opt for an Anarkali salwar suit in white. Keep your makeup and accessories minimal in this look. Let your dupatta do the talking.
Wear a tricolor jacket:
This can be a unisex trend to sport a tricolor jacket. You can sport a saffron jacket with green minimal embroideries and wear it with a white kurta or kurti. Team it up with churidar and mojris to complete the look.
Wear tricolor in accessories:
You can always use saffron, white and green together in hair accessory, earrings, lockets, and bangles. Since these accessories are worn above the waistline, these are acceptable ways to sport a flag or the colors of the flag.
So, get ready to wear the national flag colors this Republic Day responsibly and in style.
